The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Hereford, Cllr. Sue Boulter, entertained her fellow Mayors from the market towns of Herefordshire – Bromyard, Kington, Ledbury, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye – to an excellent tea in her parlour at the Town Hall in Hereford. The current Mayor is the 637th to hold the role which was created by Letter Patent by Richard II in 1383. However, the office replaced that of Chief Bailiff that dated back to much earlier times. Indeed the title of “Mayor of Hereford” appears in a number of earlier documents.
John Marshall, the Mayor’s Officer gave us a tour of the silver collection and the collection of Charters, many beautifully illustrated. The earliest was issued by Richard I in 1189 whose text can be found here. Sheriffs should note that they have no authority within the City. Here is a link to information on the silver. In addition to silver belonging to the City, there is also silver from past Herefordshire regiments and other bits relevant to the County. The Mayor’s Officer knows his stuff and entertained us well.
