The Chairman of Herefordshire Council, Cllr. Brain Willcocks, had the annual Civic Service at Hereford Cathedral organised by the Cathedral authorities quite beautifully, as usual.
The them of the service was to celebrate and thank all those who dedicate their time to caring for others. Since this ahs been the shrieval theme this year, it chimed perfectly.
We heard the Gospel reading from Matthew XXV, 31-40 in which we are reminded that those who feed the hungry and thirsty, take in the stranger, clothe the naked, look after the sick or visit those in prison, are doing the same for God.
The service was in sections under the headings of Caring For Young People, Caring for Health And Well-being, Caring For The Mind, Caring For The Elderly, Pastoral and Palliative Care.
A particularly moving moment was the solo singing of song with word and music by Bill Withers and sung by Rob Pritchard. Here they are from the internet. Please note the copyright.
But if we are wise, We know that there’s always tomorrow
And I’ll be your friend
I’ll help you carry on
For it won’t be long
‘Til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on
For no one can fill those of your needs that you won’t let show
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on
For it won’t be long
‘Til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
I’m right up the road, I’ll share your load
Here is a youtube rendition.
