Day Four – VETERANS

Herefordshire is known as being ‘Forces Friendly’ which is great as it is estimated that there are 30,000 people with connections to the Armed Forces in the county.  Veterans and their families form a significant part of this number and sometimes they find themselves in need of support. So how does our county respond?  The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, will be treated fairly, with respect and without being disadvantaged.

All 407 mainland local authorities in GB and NI have pledged to uphold the Armed Forces Covenant, and in Herefordshire the Covenant was signed in 2012. Herefordshire Council and 35 cross-sector organisations are in a partnership called HAFCP, which is responsible for implementing the Herefordshire Armed Forces Action Plan.

Through this collaboration, the many and varied Forces charities in Herefordshire are able to provide support in their own specialist field: financial assistance, housing and benefits advice, career opportunities, access to healthcare, mental health services and medical support in hospital as well as wider support in the community.
