19/09/2014
By 2014 Major Patrick Darling
The High Sheriff attended Choral Evensong at Hereford Cathedral on Sunday 3rd August to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The Precentor Andrew Piper had woven together a magnificent service of liturgy and history to mark this momentous occasion and recognise the contribution of all three services to the war effort. The High Sheriff read the first lesson from Maccabees and the Lord Lieutenant read the second lesson from Luke. Other readers included Brigadier Martin Vine, Admiral Philip Wilcox, Air Vice Marshal Michael Smart, Sebastian Bowen, and Miss Amelia Illingsworth. Buglers from the Rifles sounded the Fall In and the General Alarm in tandem fro either end of the Cathedral which was quite haunting.
Around 450 people were present including Civic representatives from all walks of Herefordshire life.
